Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLT) was approved by the FDA in 2002 for treating patients with large varicose vein problems. It is used to treat veins under the skin surface which have become incompetent due to faulty valves. The abnormal vein is catheterized with a thin flexible laser fiber and the wall is irritated using laser energy. Subsequently, the body’s natural healing process allows the non-functioning vein to close under the skin surface reducing the pressure within the visible veins on the leg. These visible veins can then be eliminated with other treatment modalities. EVLT is a minimally invasive office based procedure which negates the need for surgical stripping and ligation. There is no need for general anesthesia or sedation. The procedure is well tolerated by patients and allows for immediate ambulation and resumption of most activities.
