What are Varicose and Spider veins?
The function of a vein is to return blood back to the heart. Larger veins have one-way valves which aid in the blood flow back to the heart against the pull of gravity. In varicose veins, valves do not function normally, allowing blood to flow backwards causing veins to dilate and swell. Dilated vein can be small, threadlike and bruised in appearance (spider veins) or they can be large and bulging (varicose veins).
What causes Vein Disease?
Heredity is a major factor in the development of vein disease in both men and women. Women are more likely to develop vein disease due to hormonal influences and pregnancy. Other contributing factors include standing or sitting occupations and aging.
What are the symptoms?
Vein disorders can produce a variety of symptoms such as fatigue, heaviness, itching, burning, throbbing, aching, swelling, cramping and restlessness. These symptoms are aggravated after prolonged standing and can worsen around the menstrual cycle. Symptoms are caused by the stagnation of blood in the diseased veins. If left untreated varicose veins can result in complications such as discoloration, leg ulceration, blood clots and hemorrhage of veins.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy has proven to be an effective treatment of vein disease and has grown in popularity. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a medication with a tiny needle into abnormal veins. The medication produces inflammation with the lining of the vein wall. The vein walls are then compressed by a fitted gradient compression stocking, which helps to promote the closure of abnormal veins. Ultrasound is sometimes required to guide injections under the skin surface precisely where they will be of most benefit. Walking one hour a day aids in healing.
What is Endovenous Laser Therapy?
EVLT is the latest advancement in treating patients with large varicose veins. The abnormal vein wall is irritated with laser energy. Subsequently, the bodies natural healing process allow the non-functional vein to close under the skin surface. EVLT is a minimally invasive office based procedure which negates the need for surgical stripping. EVLT is FDA approved, well tolerated by patients and allows for immediate ambulation and resumption of most activities. We are pleased to offer the latest CoolTouch laser technology to our patients allowing most to obtain excellent results often without the need for even aspirin.
